Ankle Foot Orthoses - AFO's

Ankle foot orthoses (AFO's) are splints worn on the lower limb to treat a number of different conditions including foot drop, ankle arthritis, and unstable or painful conditions of the foot and ankle. For a full list of conditions please see more here.

Ankle foot orthoses are made from a variety of material and come in many different shapes and sizes to suit the individuals needs and condition.  The newest designs of AFO's are made from carbon fibre composite and plastic; some are custom made from plaster of paris casts of the leg; others are made to order from a collection of measurements, and others are available off the shelf.

Turbomed FS3000

The Turbomed is the newest AFO to come to the market in the UK and has been causing quite a bit of excitement. It's revolutionary design is made from a highly durable thermoplastic, and has been widely tested in rugged Canadian conditions, in marathons and triathlons; and has proven to be one of the first types of braces that can be attached to many different types of footwear including safety work boots, hiking boots, wellington boots and sandals.

The brace is an exoskeleton design meaning that it doesn't contact the skin on the foot or ankle, therefore reducing the likelihood of any discomfort or rubs, and improving patient comfort on longer walks.  The brace can easily be transferred from shoe to shoe and can be worn on either the left or right foot.

Unlike some conventional plastic rigid AFO's this brace is dynamic in that it doesn't hold the foot and ankle in a fixed position, which allows the uses much more freedom of movement meaning slopes, uneven ground, stairs and even long distance running are possible with this brace.
