Knee and Hip Conditions
Hip Arthritis
Osteoarthritis of the hip is a common age related condition that is due to general wear and tear that causes a gradual degeneration of the cartilage at the hip joint.
Arthritis is one of the most common causes of hip pain in adults aged late forties onwards, although it can occur at a younger age. It’s often linked to earlier fractures, trauma, childhood hip problems (Perthes, Congenital Hip Dysplasia), family history of osteoarthritis and being over- weight. See More
Knee Arthritis
Osteoarthritis of the knee is a common age related condition that is due to general wear and tear that causes a gradual degeneration of the cartilage at the knee joint.
Symptoms include pain which worsens with activity and improves with rest, stiffness, crepitus (a crunching or grinding sensation when you move), and swelling.
Illiotibial Band Syndrome (ITB)
Illiotabilial Band Syndrome is usually characterised by a sharp or burning pain on the outside of the knee, sometimes accompanied by swelling in the same region or along the outer thigh.
It is a common complaint in runners, cyclists, hikers and weight lifters. It is thought to be due to an overload of the fascia band which connects the pelvis to the outer knee.
Ligament Injury of the Knee
In a complete rupture of a knee ligament a loud pop or snap may be heard, pain is often sudden and severe, with swelling, a reduced range of movement, a feeling or instability of the joint and an inability to put weight on the point without pain.
In the case of a mild sprain the symptoms are much milder, there may be some discomfort along the joint line on the side of the knee that was over stretched, mild swelling or no swelling, movement and stability of the knee may not be impeded. See More
Patella-Femoral Syndrome
This condition is also known as Runners Knee and is characterized by a dull pain that is behind or around the top of the kneecap.
Typical aggravating motions include squatting, running (especially downhill), descending stairs, and prolonged sitting. It is common to see swelling, hear crepitus (crunchiness) and feel a catching, popping, or grinding sensation when you are walking or when you are moving your knee. See More
Trochanteric
Bursitis
Trochanteric Bursitis is characterized by pain at the upper outer thigh over the bony prominence of the Greater Trochanter. The hip joint itself is not involved. Pain may radiate down the outer thigh.
Trochanteric Bursitis is an inflammation of a bursa which is a small sack of jelly like fluid which sits over the bony protuberance located on the outer upper thigh bone called the Greater Trochanter. See More
Patella Tendonopathy
Patella tendonitis usually begins with a stiff feeling and pain in the patella tendon region which is just below the knee cap.
Symptoms may be worse when climbing stairs or squatting. It is common in athletes whose sport involves a lot of jumping; this condition is also known as jumper's knee.
